eBike Components: The Anatomy & Parts of an Electric Bike

Matt Young |

What do baking and engineering have in common? They both involve combining several components (or ingredients) to make something greater than the individual parts on their own – in this case an electric bike (or a delicious slice of cake!). From motors and tires to batteries and bells, each piece plays an important role in the composition of our electric bike models so you can turn every ride into an adventure. Read on to learn more about the 12 key components in our Flyer™ eBike designs.

1. Electric Motor

From a fundamental perspective, the motor on an electric bike translates electrical energy into mechanical energy. The motor on our Flyer™ eBikes is located in the rear hub. It generates torque and subsequently propels the rider forward when they pedal. Our powerful 500W brushless rear hub motor ensures high performance, efficiency, and a smooth ride.

2. Lithium-Ion Battery

Flyer™ electric bikes are powered by our 48V Flight Speed™ Lithium-Ion Battery. These rechargeable batteries are efficient and long-lasting for years of fun riding. Lightweight and easy to recharge, the batteries are also designed to fit seamlessly into the aesthetic of the bike thanks to the down tube design. Enjoy an impressive 48 voltage battery capacity of 15Ah (720Wh) with state-of-the-art Samsung 50E 21700 Cells. Travel up to 50+ miles with our Flight Speed™ Lithium-Ion technology.

3. Throttle

The throttle allows you to move without pedaling at all. Our half twist throttle is integrated into the right handlebar – simply twist to go. It's like having the wind at your back on demand. Travel with a top speed of 20 mph in throttle-only mode. The throttle is perfect to use when starting a ride to build momentum, traveling uphill, hauling cargo, or simply when you want to give your legs a rest.

4. Step-Through Frame

Flyer™ eBikes are ergonomically designed with a step-through frame for easy on and off. Plus, if you’re riding on the road with cars or making frequent pit stops on your journey, the frame design allows riders to steady themselves by putting their feet on the ground when coming to a stop without the top tube getting in the way.

5. Brake System

Our electric bikes feature a Tektro mechanical disc brake system delivering powerful braking on demand. Located on the handlebars, the aluminum alloy levers are easily accessible for quick stopping. Both models also have an automatic motor cutoff switch which safely stops the electric bicycle when you brake.

6. Gear Shifter

Flyer™ eBikes feature a 7-speed Shimano shifter and derailleur. Located on the right handlebar, use the gear shifter to move between gears to meet your pedaling needs and help you conquer hills fearlessly. Lower gears make pedaling “easier” with less effort required to complete a revolution while higher gears make pedaling “harder” with more effort required. Lower gears are helpful for uphill riding while higher gears are beneficial for downhill.

7. Rear Rack

Integrated rear racks on both Flyer™ eBike models allow riders to travel with kids and cargo in tow. Ride with up to one additional passenger or 80 pounds of cargo on the Flyer™ M880 or with up to two additional passengers or 150 pounds of cargo on the Flyer™ L885. With compatible eBike accessories ranging from a Small Rear Storage Basket to a Thule® Yepp Maxi Seat, customize the storage on your cargo eBike to address your unique hauling needs.

8. Tires

The wheels on our electric bikes are 3” fat tires and feature a puncture resistant liner to enhance durability and keep you rolling. The Flyer™ M880 features two 26” tires. The Flyer™ L885 has a 26” front wheel and smaller 20” back wheel, designed to create a lower center of gravity for increased stability and enhanced efficiency for a smoother ride with cargo in tow.

9. Lights & Reflectors

With safety in mind, Flyer™ eBikes are designed to ensure you can see and be seen when riding. Control the high intensity front LED headlight from your LCD display. Reflectors and an integrated taillight with brake light also enhance visibility on the go.

10. Display

Control your ride with the digital LCD display. Located on the left handlebar, the display features a speedometer, odometer, battery charge level, pedal assist level, and light indicator.

11. Kickstand

Sturdy, steel, and spring loaded: the dual leg kickstand on a Flyer™ stabilizes your electric bike when loading and unloading or when not in use.

12. Bell

Integrated for safe riding, our dinging bell helps to alert others you are nearby. Located on the right handlebar, it also delivers added fun too.
