SBTi Approved Target
We are proud to be the first toy company to get a science-based emissions reduction target approved by Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) .
Our near-term goal is to significantly reduce emissions by 2030. We plan to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.
RE100
We are a member of RE100 , the global corporate renewable energy initiative uniting hundreds of businesses committed to using 100% renewable energy.
We have achieved 100% renewable electricity across global operations annually since 2020 through a combination of solar energy and high-quality RECs.
Build-A-Forest
In partnership with The Arbor Day Foundation, Radio Flyer plants a tree for every toy purchased on radioflyer.com. We have planted over 500,000 trees to date.
Carbon Neutral Shipping
We offset our greenhouse gas emissions through a commitment to carbon neutral shipping for every item purchased on radioflyer.com.
The Chemical Footprint Project
We are a member of the Clean Production Action Chemical Footprint Project to align with efforts to better manage chemicals used in the manufacturing process.
New Product Sustainability Review
We review the carbon footprint for every new product during our Product Development Process. Our goal is for our new products to have smaller carbon footprints than the products they are replacing.
We perform internal Cradle-to-Gate Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) for every new product. These assessments help our engineers and designers identify carbon hot spots and make design or material changes to reduce the carbon footprint of a product long before its launch.
Recycled Plastics
We have tested dozens of recycled materials and while most have failed, we have found success in 3 without compromising our rigorous quality and safety requirements:
• rHDPE - Post consumer recycled plastic (PCR)
• rPP - Ocean bound plastic (OBP)
• rPET - Ocean bound plastic (OBP)
Durability & Testing
Sustainability is key to how we approach product design – we build durable products that last. All products and components undergo extensive fatigue, abuse, performance, and environmental testing. These internal Radio Flyer requirements ensure our products exceed our extended warranty and have a long life.
Our FUNomenal customer service team also assures our customers that we’ll be there to help restore well-loved products. Every year we ship tens of thousands of replacement parts to restore products outside of their warranty period.
Recyclable Packaging
The majority of our packaging is corrugate and paper-based because we know these materials are most likely to be recycled properly.
• Our packaging is 95% recyclable by mass across our full product line.
• The majority of our vendors use 100% recycled corrugate.
• Our packaging is made up of 84.9% recycled content by mass.
Removal of Harmful Materials
We also actively remove harmful materials from our packaging.
Here are some highlights:
• We are close to eliminating all EPS foam (Styrofoam) from our product line.
• We began replacing single-use plastic poly bags with brown paper bags in 2019. This eliminates the use of 4 metric tons of single-use plastic bags every year on our stroller wagon product line alone!
Energy Efficiency
Our manufacturers report their total annual energy usage to us and complete an energy assessment annually. This allows us greater visibility into their sustainability and energy ambitions, and helps us partner with them to identify carbon reduction projects.
We worked with one of our largest suppliers to better insulate our injection molding machines. This improved the energy efficiency of our manufacturing by preventing heat-loss. This reduces the energy required to make our products by over 80,000 kWHr per year.Â
Renewable Energy
Solar energy is rapidly expanding across the globe and across our supply chain. One of our largest suppliers is 58% powered by solar. This reduces the carbon emissions of products manufactured at this facility by over 9% as compared to manufacturing at a traditionally coal-powered factory.
In 2023, solar energy was used to power 17% of the manufacturing across our entire product line.Â
At Radio Flyer, the well-being of your family is our top priority. We take great care in ensuring our products not only spark joy, but also meet the highest safety standards for chemical composition.
We take a strong precautionary approach to chemical composition, using a Restricted Substances List (RSL) to communicate our priorities and standards related to safer chemicals with our suppliers. We update this list annually by monitoring global chemical requirements and adopting the most stringent published standards.
We use a third-party lab to test 100% of the materials used in our products to understand their chemical composition.
Chemicals of High Concern (COHCs)
We actively measure, report and remove COHCs according to published lists and prioritize the removal of those with the greatest impact to human health and the environment.
Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC)
Our product line is 97.7% PVC-free and our ambition is to be 100% PVC-free.
Phthalates and Heavy Metals
We do not add regulated phthalates or heavy metals such as lead, mercury, or chromium to any Radio Flyer product.
LEED Platinum Certified
We are extremely proud of our LEED Platinum certification and have worked hard to create high levels of operational efficiency across water efficiency, energy, materials, resources and so much more.
Radio Flyer’s Chicago HQ remains in its original location dating back to 1917. In fact, our historic foundation is still in use as we continue to retrofit our facilities to be greener and more efficient.
Geothermal Heating
We installed a large geothermal well field in our backyard which uses high efficiency pumps to pump coolant through the well, resulting in more than 37% reduction in energy consumption for heating and cooling.
Solar Power
We installed a 606kW Solar Array on the roof in 2020. These panels cover over 53% of our total electricity use.
Water Conservation
Our 2 water cisterns which harvest 10,000 gallons of rainwater each for irrigation use. This has reduced our potable water consumption by more than 50%.
Meet the Eco Flyers
The Eco Flyers are an employee-led committee that focuses on minimizing the impact we have on the environment – both at work and home. The committee identifies opportunities to help employees reduce their carbon footprint and shares new ways to educate our team on all things sustainable.
The Eco Flyers manage our internal composting efforts and our Little Green Garden – a well-loved vegetable and herb garden that is grown, harvested and enjoyed by Flyers.
